Whoopty” is a song by American rapper CJ. The song was initially self-released on July 30, 2020, before being re-released by Warner Records following his signing to the label. The song reached number 10 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart in February 2021, and has reached the UK top three and the Billboard Global 200 top 10. The song samples Arijit Singh‘s “Sanam Re” (2015).

Background

The song contains a sample of the Indian song “Sanam Re” (2015) by Arijit Singh and Mithoon. It is reminiscent of Brooklyn drill and marks a departure from CJ’s melodic rapping.[1] CJ said he received comparisons to late rapper Pop Smoke, because of the song’s drill sound. He said in an interview with HipHopDX that Pop Smoke’s absence inspired “Whoopty”, who he considers the artist that popularized the music style.[2] He attributed its popularity to the energy conveyed in the track and its video.[1]

Critical reception

Pitchfork‘s Alphonse Pierre wrote that while the song “may be the biggest drill record of the last several months”, “everything about it is so painfully unoriginal” in that it combines “Pop Smoke‘s uk drill production with 22Gz‘s lingo”.[3] In an earlier piece for the same site, Pierre felt the lyrics “might as well have been spit out by a machine trained on the Raps and Hustles YouTube page” and concluded that “[T]he only good thing to ever come out of Staten Island remains the Wu-Tang Clan“.[4] Tom Breihan of Stereogum had similar critiques for the song, though he added, “The song works. It moves.”[5]

Durk Derrick Banks, better known by his stage nameLil Durk (born October 19, 1992), is an American rapper, singer, and songwriter.[4] He is the lead member and founder of his own collective and record label, Only the Family.[5][6]

Early life[edit]

Born on October 19, 1992, Banks spent much of his early years at home with a great deal of responsibility as his father was incarcerated when he was 7 months old.[7] He recalled that there were times when he did not have enough food in his home when he was younger. He started his first breakthrough social media channels like Myspace and YouTube, and became more fond of the idea of being a rapper once his online fan base started to grow more rapidly than expected.[8] Banks took his career more seriously after becoming a father at 17 and dropping out of his high school, Paul Robeson High School, in order to join the Black Disciples, a street gang in Chicago.[8] Soon after joining he began to get into trouble with the law and served time in October 2011 due to gun charges, including possession of a firearm with a defaced serial number.[9] He later pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of aggravated unauthorized use of a weapon, according to court records.[9]
